A 2012 report by international consulting and research firm Frost & Sullivan, titled “Trade Corridors: Key Focus Area for Sub-Saharan African Governments,” says that over the next 20 years, road networks will be rehabilitated and improved at a cost of $9.18 billion; rail networks will be upgraded and extended at a cost of $18.81 billion; and ports in the southern Africa region alone will see expansion totaling $3.53 billion. The goal is to develop multimodal transport networks that allow freight to be carried seamlessly from ports via road and/or rail without being handled when the transport mode is changed, and with a minimum of time spent at border crossings.
